    Yoga for trauma

If you are looking for some helpful and informed resources on issues dealing with trauma, visit the Trauma Justice Center website. It’s got information on resources, studies, and programs to help people address issues of trauma.  I just completed a training on trauma-sensitive yoga and it was inspiring. Lila Press’s Yoga Makes Me Feel …  was warmly received and will be part of a trauma handbook to be reviewed by this group.

    Exploring That Fine Line …

Charlotte Bell has again given us a lot to think about in her articleWalking Your Talk:  Teaching Non-Competitive Yoga? My response to her ideas is:  Well, yoga is about exploring boundaries, and fine lines are included in that!  I took my first ever yoga class from you ... wow, 20 years ago!  Knowing nothing about yoga and not much about my body.  I was hooked on yoga after one class with you.  I always felt you gave your students plenty of room to explore within the safe boundaries of your class design.  And, I will say, having spent many hours in your classes all those years ago, that any demos of poses you did only made me feel open to the possibilities.  My forward folds in those days brought my hands to about my knees...  It's always good as a teacher, and a person, to evaluate and re-evaluate one's motivations for teaching and the language with which we teach.  So thank you for that reminder, Charlotte...along with thank you for so many other things! Shanti,Yael

    YogaBuddies helps kids relax ~

Visit the YogaBuddies website for a ‘Pose of the Week”.   Yoga helps kids learn to recognize signs of stress in themselves and then gives them the tools to help them relax.  Perhaps there is a child with whom you can share some yoga!

Yoga at The Children’s Center, Salt Lake City

The Children’s Center offers mental health services and early intervention for preschool aged children with emotional and behavioral problems.

We’ve been doing yoga programs for The Children’s Center preschool classes and training the preschool teachers in the program. Some comments from the teachers:

“I was surprised at how long many of them sat and listened, were able to follow instruction, both verbal and physical.”
‘The kids were engaged, smiling. There was excitement and they felt it was safe activity.”

We are using our donations from the 2011 Yogis Give Back to fund this program! For more info visit our website www.greentreeyoga.org.

    Yoga for Trauma in Children

Yoga is a powerful way for people to regain connection — to their bodies, feelings, and others.

The book, Yoga Makes Me Feel … by Yael Calhoun, Illustrated by Svea Lunoe, (click here) was written for children who are overcoming

trauma or abuse.  Take a look and see what you think — it’s about to go into it’s second printing because it’s popular in all schools too.
