We are in the thick of classroom yoga.  KSL filmed us on Monday, stay tuned for which day at 5 am you can catch it (or maybe I will post the link..) Many thanks to Julie Iorg, our wonderful volunteer yoga teacher who said, “We started today! YEAH! They too are a great school and I feel so lucky to be working with them! All of the teachers and students were so thankful to have the yoga breaks. They were excited and welcoming and each class truly enjoyed the break that we shared ..Thanks Yael for everything. As your yoga breaks are a gift to these children- it is a gift for me to share them!” free breaks on our website!

    Having Fun in School!

Many thanks to Rachelle Ballard, a super GreenTREE Yoga volunteer who is doing the 5 minute yoga breaks at Newman Elementary School (CDs provided thanks to a SLCC grant!) She says, “I just wanted to tell you how much fun I’m having at Newman. I love those kids! It’s been so fun and the kids just eat it up. I’ll genuinely be sad when its over. “

Salt Lake School District learns to Relax!

Many thanks to the wonderful teachers, K-12, in the Salt Lake District (about 90 strong!) who attended our yoga workshop at their Career, College, and Civic Reading Spring Conference today.
They came to learn some 5 minute yoga breaks to share with their classes and to help manage their own stress. It was such a fun group — lots of good breathing and laughing and requests for staff trainings. For more on the yoga breaks, visit greentreeyoga.org or contact Yael at yoga@greentreeyoga.org for more info on how to get it into your school.

    Set Yourself Up for Success

School Volunteering: How Much is Too Much?

The New York Times had an article  on parents who just got so burned out from volunteering they had to say NO.  Don't let it get to that point.  Make realistic decisions about what you like to do and how much time you have to give.  It can be once, it can be 10 minutes a week.
Set yourself up for success so that you don't end up saying NO to everything school related.  It's your time -- take control of how you use it!  Why it's just like your breathing - you control how you breathe and therefore how if affects how you feel.  Ahh.  Maybe volunteer in a school to teach some 5 minute yoga breaks!  Visit greentreeyoga.org to learn more about the program. Listen to free tracks!

    Connect to Yourself

Here is a fun idea for helping kids, K-6, explore more about who they are and what qualities they think they possess.

Click on this link to get a free activity from the new book “School Volunteer Handbook:  For K-6 Teachers and Parents” (Lila Press, 2011).

    Proclaim a School Volunteer Week

Take a page from the Sacramento County Office of Education and proclaim a school volunteer week to help raise awareness and build your school volunteer program. It is not too early to start planning for the week in April.

Rally some volunteers to do classroom yoga breaks.  More information on this volunteer program is available at www.greentreeyoga.org.

    Champions of Change: Healthy Families

     Nutrition Network

Another way to volunteer is to help bring some good health into your school.  This website gives some easy steps to organizing folks to help families eat more healthy foods and get exercise.  Perhaps you could be a “Champion of Change” in your neighborhood.
